What's New
6/11 Tim has a new fiddle CD called Timmetry which is getting great reviews. And Lo's jam group, the Roadapple Ramblers, have also released a CD, More Tunes per Hour, which has a carload of great tunes & vocals. See the Lo gear page for details.

9/10 Mary and Hilary have published several instructional/repertoire books. Check the Lo Gear page for more info.

6/09 We are now producing a line of banjo ukes. Please visit the J/Ukes page to take a look.

3/09 After hearing the Luke Smathers Band from Canton, NC, in the early 90's, I was taken by their music. I was already an old-time convert but their "Mountain Swing" and "early radio" music blew me away. I happened upon a banjo uke and found it to be, at least to my way of thinking, a perfect complement to this music.  Now, almost 20 years later, old banjo ukes are getting scarcer and often require substantial restoration. Also, scale lengths longer than soprano are virtually non-existent. Ergo my decision to expand the banjo line into the uke territory.

8/08 I've worked with David Day to generate photographs which convey would not only the basic form of our banjos, but reveal the soul of the instruments and the materials used.

7/08 We have been developing a banjo uke model to add to the Cedar Mountain line. We expect to begin offering them for sale later this fall.

5/08 Mary and I continue to host our old time and traditional music jams on Tuesday nights at Celestial Mountain Music, which we started in 1995. Please stop by if you're in the area.

5/08 Several months ago, Mary Z & Bob Cox were here, and Mary asked me to play Wade Ward's "Peach Bottom Creek," which I has showed her a while back, as a banjo duet for her new recording. We played it, Bob recorded, and it's on her latest CD, Florida Banjo, which is a fine bunch of tunes, played with Mary's unique flair for making every piece something special & different. Check with us at celestial@comporium.net, or ar Mary Z's site, www.maryzcox.com for this & her many other recordings & tab books.

5/08 More on the recording front! Mary and I, along with Hilary Dirlam and Tim, have completed a recording of Tuesday night jam tunes. It will be available in June. Check the Lo Gear page of this site for more details.

4/08 Tim's award-winning progressive bluegrass band, High Windy, has released their first CD, A Greater Storm. Tim is the fiddler, but plays clawhammer (a CMB) banjo on one cut. Fine songwriting & awesome musicianship & vocals. You can get one from us at celestial@comporium.net, or at www.highwindyband.com

3/08 I am now 62 years old! My apprentices and I have crafted over 400 banjos since my start in 1996.

11/06 Following a lengthy development process we have expanded our scope within the banjo market by adding the Jubilo and Standard model series. Please browse our website to learn more about these banjos. For our friend Hilary Dirlam, we have recently completed our first 21-1/2" scale travel banjo. This scale was pioneered by CMB and respected banjo player/teacher Diane Jones.

2/06 Our son Tim has worked with me now for his first year. Tim is a graduate of N.C. State's forestry program. Prior to joining Cedar Mountain Banjos, he had been doing conventional and timber frame home building. Tim is also an accomplished, award winning musician. He plays fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass, and about everything with strings. Not to speak of the digeridoo.
